{Review} Eve by Anna Carey

The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust...and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

My review

I'd wanted to read this book as soon as I saw the cover and read the summary. I find its cover totally gorgeous and magnificent. Eve is a really captivating and enthralling novel. I read it quite quickly because I so wanted to know the rest of the story. A lot of young-adult dystopias are released right now and I think that Anna Carey offers the reader something different, but that is really worth it. Eve is half-way between Wither, The Road and Delirium and it offers us an original universe, engaging characters and a captivating plot. In four words: I totally loved it.

It was really easy for me to relate to the characters that is Eve or Caleb, as well as the other characters. They are all really well-developed. Eve is strong and courageous. She has a rather strange education, it looks a bit like propaganda. Her school and teachers were shut in on themselves so the young-girl is not fully aware of the world around her. She is also quite naive at times so some scenes and dialogues are rather light and amusing. Caleb also charmed me a lot, he is protective, gentle, cute and lovable.

The plot is fast-paced with a lot of action. There are also lots of twists and suspense. Anna Carey sometimes makes really surprising choices and I was amazed and surprised on many occasions. The ending is pretty horrible with a big cliffhanger, right in the midst of action. I am now very eager to read the sequel, because I find it simply untenable. The outcome is totally heartbreaking and I do not know how I will be able to wait more than a year for the sequel. One thing is sure; it will be very, very long.

Anna Carey's writing is utterly pleasant. She knows how to write and especially how to keep her readers' attention. I was totally hooked from the first line to the last. The writing flows and is totally smooth. The storyline is really good and I couldn't put down this book. There is at times a little humor particularly in the dialogues, and especially because Eve is pretty naive. Anna Carey also perfectly writes feelings and emotions. I was often totally moved. Emotions are very well-described, and some passages are completely heartbreaking.

The atmosphere and the universe are very well-written and well-developed. Eve is halfway between a dystopia and a post-apocalyptic novel. The society sets up by Anna Carey is extremely interesting and it totally captivated me. The descriptions are particularly well-written and it was very easy for me to visualize the scenery, especially the magnificent Lake Tahoe and Eve's trip on Road 80, in California to the Golden Gate Bridge.

To sum up, if you like dystopian novels, end of the world's atmosphere and stories with lots of action then don't hesitate a second. You have to check out this book. Eve is released October 4, 2011. And now I'm waiting for only one thing, to finally be able to read the sequel. I'm really looking forward to it.
